The Components used for Total Knee Replacement Surgery 2

The femoral component

This attaches to the thigh bone. The surface is as perfectly smooth as possible and is made from  cobalt chrome alloy.

The femoral component

The underside is "porous coated" for the bone to grow into the component, to lock it into position.

The tibial component

This consists of a metal base plate (porous coated on the underside) and a rotating Ultra High Molecular Weight PolyEthylene (UHMWPE)  insert.

The tibial component is smooth on its top surface to allow the polyethylene insert to rotate freely

The patella component is like a button. It is smooth  where it articulates with the femoral component. It has posts to help lock into the bone and is cemented into position.

Sawbones have been developed specifically for use in  exercises where a realistic bone specimen is required to provide a working model for various orthopaedic operations.
