The operative photos of live surgery of a total knee replacement

The Start

An antiseptic is applied to the leg and it is then wrapped in a sterile plastic

Exposure

A cut is placed over the front of the knee. The structures are released to fully expose the knee joint.

Preparation of the knee for insertion of the components

A saw blade is slotted into the jigs to achieve precise cuts

Preparation of the knee for insertion of the components

Preparation of the knee for insertion of the components 2

The process is repeated in the other slots in the jig

Insertion of the prosthesis 1.

The bones of the femur and tibia are prepared to fit exactly to the size of the prosthesis so a "press-fit" can be achieved

Insertion of the prosthesis 2

The prosthesis can then be placed onto the knee and be tightly locked on, relying on the initial press fit and subsequent bony ingrowth

The finish

Once all the components of the knee replacement are inserted, the knee can be checked for stability and tightness. The knee is then cleaned out of any bony "debris" and sutured closed.
