This demonstration of
the technique of insertion of a partial knee replacement has
been performed on plastic bone models called saw bones,
created to have a feel not dissimilar to real bone. These
are frequently used for training purposes. |
|

|
Following exposure of
the bones a jig is applied to help determine how much bone
need be resected from the tibia to accommodate the
components |
 |
A sagittal saw is then
placed within the jig |
  |
After the cuts have been
performed the bone is removed. This often only a millimetre
or so when there is significant wear in the bone. |
  |
A jig is then applied to
prepare the femur. |
 |
The bone has thus far
been prepared to accommodate the prosthesis. |
  |
The femoral (far left)
and tibial (near left) components can then be trailed to
confirm the right size and thickness of the
components. |
 |
A number of different
sizes are available |
  |
Once the sizes are
determined the definitive components are
cemented
into position. |
