William Hunter (1718-1783) an  anatomist, in his first paper to the Royal Society 'On the Structure and Diseases of Articulating Cartilages' 1743 commented on the importance of articular cartilage (the joint lining) that:

"Once we violate this substance," as you see in the photograph above, "articular cartilage defects are a troublesome thing. They don't heal."
