Rehabilitation
after Rotator Cuff Repair Surgery Physiotherapy should be started the day after surgery.
*The sling is worn all the time including at night except for exercises and showering *Exercises are commenced after the first few days and will be determined by the operative findings *Initial exercises are pendulum and gentle elevation using the opposite hand *The elbow should also be straightened fully and flexed when the sling is off *wash your arm pit by leaning forward and prantil powder to be applied if rash occurs The aim is a minimum of 90 degrees of flexion by the sixth week NO active movements in the first 6 weeks and
no additional exercises until you are told it is safe WEEKS 6-12 *The sling can be removed for increasing periods through the day and eventually discarded *Commence gentle active exercises as demonstrated by your physiotherapist AIM for full range of movement at the end of 12 weeks DO NOT lift any significant weights from the shoulder NO pushing, pulling or lifting heavy weights
or repetitive overhead work WEEKS 12-16 *The sling can be discarded and strengthening exercises commenced (theraband) *Gradual increase in overhead activity *plan to return to manual work depending on
duties. WEEK 26 *it is anticipated you can return to most pre-injury duties at work *There is no restriction on weights to be lifted but strength may not yet have fully recovered *If stiffness is still present, a distention
arthrogram or manipulation under anaesthetic is worth considering 18 MONTHS *it is anticipated full pre-injury duties at work, or sport is achieved *There are no specific work restrictions.
