Types Of Shoulder Replacement

There are two broad procedures for  shoulder replacement procedures.

If the surgeon only uses the metal humeral (upper arm bone)  components  the procedure is called a hemi-arthroplasty. The labelled head/body and shaft on the left make up the humeral components.

If the surgeon uses both the humeral components and the glenoid (shoulder blade socket) prosthesis, then the procedure is called a total shoulder arthroplasty. The surgeon decides which procedure to use based on the extent of damage to your shoulder.

There have been dramatic improvements in the types of shoulder replacement available. with the "elective" components, used for primary osteoarthritis. There is a new component for "trauma", when the shoulder is fracture beyond repair.

The most innovative and exciting development was the reverse. The reverse was designed to treat CTA.
