Do You Need a Shoulder Surgeon in Sydney?

When your shoulder is giving you trouble, it’s worth having it properly assessed before deciding on the best course of action. Depending on the underlying cause, some shoulder problems settle well with conservative care, while others benefit more from surgical treatment.

When Non-Surgical Treatment May Help

Many common causes of shoulder pain and stiffness – including mild rotator cuff irritation, early-stage impingement and general overuse – often respond well to a structured non-surgical program. This may include physiotherapy, activity modification, anti-inflammatory measures and, in some cases, guided injections. Many patients see meaningful improvement this way, particularly when the problem is caught early.

When Surgery May Be Considered

Surgery is generally considered when conservative measures haven’t resolved the problem, or when there is a more significant issue – such as a large rotator cuff tear, recurrent shoulder instability, or advanced joint wear – that is unlikely to improve without surgical correction. The right approach depends on your specific diagnosis, imaging findings and how the shoulder is affecting your daily life.

Getting the Right Assessment

Dr Mark Haber is an orthopaedic surgeon (FRACS) with a special interest in shoulder surgery, seeing patients across Sydney CBD, Macquarie University, Wollongong and Campbelltown. A proper clinical assessment is the best way to understand what’s causing your shoulder pain and to discuss whether conservative treatment or surgery is the more appropriate path for you.
