Shoulder Anatomy and Injury Risk: What Sydney Patients Should Know

The shoulder is one of the most mobile joints in the body, with a wider range of motion than any other joint. That mobility, however, comes at a cost: the shoulder relies on a relatively shallow joint socket and a complex network of muscles, tendons, and ligaments to stay stable, which makes it more prone to injury and instability than more constrained joints like the hip.
Why the shoulder is vulnerable
The shoulder joint itself is supported by the rotator cuff muscles and tendons, the surrounding ligaments, and the shoulder blade (scapula), which all work together to keep the ball of the upper arm bone centred in its socket during movement. When any part of this system is overloaded, injured, or weakened, the joint can become unstable, inflamed, or damaged.
Activities that increase injury risk
Repetitive overhead movement is one of the main risk factors for shoulder injury. Occupations and activities that commonly place strain on the shoulder include:
- Swimming, particularly freestyle and butterfly strokes
- Painting and decorating, due to sustained overhead arm positions
- Construction and trades work involving repetitive lifting or overhead tasks
- Racquet sports and throwing sports
Over time, this kind of repetitive loading can contribute to conditions such as rotator cuff tendinopathy or tears, shoulder impingement, and instability.
When to seek an assessment
If you have ongoing shoulder pain, weakness, stiffness, or a sense of instability – particularly if it’s affecting your work, sport, or sleep – it’s worth having it assessed by a doctor.
